THE EXHIBITION
— Other Memories,
— Other Memories,
By invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
the Instituto Camões on the occasion of the
Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil, the
exhibition “Other Memories, Other Threads” brings
together more than two hundred works from the
Teixeira de Freitas collection, with the intention of
collectively reflecting on some of the most
significant aspects that constitute the historical and
contemporary relationship between Brazil and
Portugal.
Thought and brought together by a Brazilian
collector that has been based in Portugal for over
30 years, the Teixeira de Freitas collection found
the main pillars for its development in the
categories of Conceptual Art, Architecture,
Landscape, Literature, Ephemeral Art and Artist
Books. Gathered mainly between 2000 and 2014,
this collection directly reflects the values and
dynamics characteristic of the arts system in which
it was developed. Although it is a global collection,
which is visible by the artists who compose it, its
development has always offered a particular
attention to the art produced in Brazil and Portugal
– which makes it especially powerful for discussing
Luso-Brazilian ties.
However, “Other Memories, Other Threads” does
not limit itself to showing artists from these
countries. Taking into account the “intimacy of the
four continents” (an expression used by the
American researcher Lisa Lowe to describe the
fundamental connections between the peoples of
the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe during the
colonial process of construction of liberal modernity
Geta Bratescu | Memory - Books Without Name | 1990
and in its continuities), this exhibition articulates works made by artists in the most diverse political, economic and social contexts, with the intention of providing productive frictions between different perspectives, which, in this show, go far beyond national identities.
This exhibition is composed of five transversal
readings of the collection, organized under the titles
‘Other Memories, Threads (same as the exhibition
title, a nucleus that deals with the need to have the
past, present, to build other futures); 'The Atlantics:
Plots, Distances, Abysses' (which juxtaposes
different languages, poetic strategies and
cosmovisions, to complexify the imaginaries related
to the Atlantic Ocean); 'ruinconstruction' (which
responds to the approximation between these two
terms in colonialism studies, taking advantage of
the important focus of the collection on architecture
and construction themes); ‘Studies on Freedom’
(which proposes a pedagogical and constructive
approach to the theme, bringing together works
that deal with processes of refusal, revolt, struggle
and insurrection); and finally 'Poetry and Fable:
Language and Apotheosis' (which investigates
language and language as spaces of vitality,
self-realization and invention of worlds).
Trying to find alternative ways to approach the
Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil, the
exhibition “Other Memories, Other Threads”
proposes essays, experiments and choreographies
that aim to open new passages to the past,
avoiding linearities and the powerful, but frayed,
categories regularly used by critical theory. With
this exhibition, we seek to weave different
memories into the fabric of the collective
imagination, so that the star that rises on the
horizon is the sign of more laudable storylines in the
times to come.
